The Darkling Sword
By Maradas Graham
Of all the Queen's subjects, noble reader, there are few who are more respected and feared than the lady Ember, Master Smith and War Mistress to her majesty. Though long imprisoned by the Goblin King, Ember is a name that still lies fresh in the minds of the Unseelie, for before she was tricked by the Goblin King, she had never been bested in battle, not had her might been challenged more than once by a single foe. Her skill in both military tactics and in weapons-craft is legendary, and has been sorely missed by the Queen.
Many hundred years ago, gentle reader, by our mortal reckoning, Lady Ember, Mistress of Flame and Steel, forged the most perfect weapons known to the Unseelie. With an inborn skill a mere mortal could never posses, Ember formed fine swords to be wielded by the fiercest knights of the Queen. The moon-silver sword of Fate, which dealt the near-fatal blow to the great Border Knight Justice, was on of Ember's earlier blades. Arimar's double bladed axe, which cut down the Gate Tree in a single stroke, was one of Ember's making, and the jeweled daggers of Dame Vosta, and the Seven-Fold Arrows of Pelathan, and the blade with which the Forsworn Knight slew his Seelie lover. There were few favoured by the Queen who did not, at some point, find themselves gifted by her loyal Lady Ember. It is rumoured that the first sword carried by the Lord of the Hunt was crafter by the War Mistress, and that the ancient blade still hangs in his great hall.
